Thunder Bay is aging. It’s also getting smaller. Five thousand fewer people live here than 15 years ago. The province believes the trend will continue. Those are facts. If we are to turn this around, we need to work with the people that have invested their hopes, dreams and money in this city. I’m proposing to raise the profile of our Mining Readiness Strategy. Currently, there is a gap between how much business Thunder Bay companies are doing and what they could be doing. I will push to make sure the city helps in any way it can to close that gap.
My other priority is to release the people-power currently locked up in our community. I’ll take a million dollars from casino revenues and give it to the Crime Prevention Council. The Council will invite people to propose new programs for our recreation centres and elsewhere. The goal will be to make our downtowns more liveable and welcoming to newcomers.
For now, I want to build neighbourhoods, not an event centre that could put the cost of living here beyond the means of homeowners.
